Manali is a valley nestled in the mountains of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh near the northern end of the Kullu valley. Manali is located in the Kullu district. It is about 270km north of the state capital, Shimla. It is 309 km northeast of Chandigarh. It is 544 km northeast of Delhi. Delhi is its federal capital. Manali is a small town. Its population is around 8,100. Manali is a popular tourist destination. It serves as the gateway to Lahaul, Spiti as well as Leh.




In Manali, the climate is predominantly cold during winter & moderately cool during summer. The temperature ranges from 4 degree Celsius to 26 degree Celsius over the year. The average temperature during summer is between 10 degree Celsius to 26 degree Celsius. In winters, the average temperature is between -15 degree Celsius to 12 degree Celsius. Manali is named after the Sanatan Hindu law giver Manu. The name Manali is regarded as the deravative of & Manu-Alaya; which literally means adobe of Manu. Manali lies in the north of Kullu valley. The valley is often referred to as the valley of Gods.

The British introduced apple trees in the area. India’s 1st Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru favoured this as a holiday destination in the mountains. How To Reach Kullu-Manali

The nearest airport is the Bhuntar airport. Bhuntar airport is located at Bhuntar town. It is situated on NH21 about 50 km south of Manali. It is 10 km south of Kullu town. The airport is also known as Kullu-Manali airport. It has more than a km long runway. Air India has regular flights to the airport from New Delhi. Himalyan bulls has also started flights on Kullu-Chandigarh- Kullu thrice a day. The road distance from Chandigarh to Manali is 310 km. The total distance from Delhi to Manali is 570 km. Luxury buses including Volvo usually ply overnight on this route and are available from all major bus terminals. There are also 12 non-AC bus services.




HRTC full form is Himachal Road Transport corporation. HRTC runs 5 daily Volvo & AC buses on Delhi-Manali route. HPTDC full form is Himachal Tourism Development Corporation. There are also 2 separate Volvos run by HPTDC. Lots of private operators run daily buses in evening from Delhi & Chandigarh. Its cost is very reasonable. A hotel called Snow Valley Resorts offer complete packages with Volvo and sightseeing.

The nearest narrow gauge railhead is at Joginder Nagar(175 km). The Kalka-Shimla railway is nostalgic narrow gauge route culminating at the state capital of Shimla wherefrom one has to travel by road to Manali. There is also Bilaspur-Mandi- Leh line for the proposed railway line through this area.

It is also known as Hadimba temple. It is an ancient cave temple dedicated to Hidimbi Devi, wife of Bhima. Bhima was a figure in the Indian epic Mahabharata.

Solang Valley:
It is also known as Solang Nala. It derives its name from combination of words Solang(nearby village) and Nullah(water stream).

Raghunath Temple:
In the 17 th century, Raja Jagat Singh of Kullu committed a great mistake. To atone the sin, he sent a senior courtier to Ayodhya for a statue of Lord Rama. This temple was built by Raja Jagat Singh to house the image and it is revered even today. Every year international fair Dusshera is celebrated with local deities in honour of Lord Raghunath.

Bijli Mahadev Temple:
It is located at 2,345 meters from sea level and is about 10 km from Kullu. The staff of the temple is 60 feet high. It can be seen from the Kullu valley too. It is the highest point around Kullu from where the beautiful view of the whole town can be experienced. Make sure to visit Kullu Manali.
