Tell us About yourself?

Hello Readers! I am Lt Cdr Richa. After having served in India Navy for 7 years, I wrote a Movie for the popular Character “Chhota Bheem”, penned down a picture book for Pratham publications which has now been translated into 7 Indian and International languages and freelanced for several magazines.

Now I am a full time Travel Curator at  http://lighttravelaction.com/

What’s your favourite place so far?

Even though it sounds cliched I would say Maldives. We have been to this place with children and stayed in water villas. This luxurious stay did cut a deep hole in our pockets but it was worth the money spent. Honeymoon or no honey moon, Maldives is a very romantic place. My kids would get delighted to see baby sharks come close to the shore. Since we were staying in water villas we could see full grown sharks and sting rays swim under our villa. I remember once while snorkeling with the kids, I noticed a jelly fish swim towards us. We hurried back to safety. I think we swam the fastest that day 😛

What can’t you travel without?

My ‘Happy-go-lucky’ Spirit! I think I can’t do anything without it. For all practical purposes, I guess the answer would be Money and ID card. If you have these two, everything else can be arranged!!

Do you prefer solo travel or with someone else?

I am an Opportunist kind of traveler 😉 I like to travel whenever life gives me the opportunity to travel. I travel with children, parents, in general as a family. But I do go on Very High Altitude treks sans the family. We travel on budget as well as at times we indulge in luxury travel too. So I guess we are “Dhakkad Ghumakkads” – dauntless travelers!

Which country has the friendliest people?

I guess India!! Not that we have had any bad experiences abroad but I think Indians in general are very friendly towards tourists.

Who is the most interesting person you’ve met so far?

Instead of a person I would say that one entire village was extremely interesting. There is this village called Kongthong in the Meghalaya state of India. Here people don’t have names but only tunes for their names. Very intriguing and beautiful this place is. You can read more about it here – https://lighttravelaction.com/meghalaya-travel-guide/

What’s been your scariest moment?

I had just finished my Goechala Trek. I was to fly back home next day and so I decided to indulge in some local food a day before. I had ‘Pani-Puri’ at a street shop and got bad stomach infection. Since I was traveling alone I had to take care of myself, buy medicine for myself and board the flight on time next day.

Frankly speaking I still haven’t learnt any lesson from the above experience. I still can’t resist the temptation of tasting the local food no matter where.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?

  • Free Spirited
  • Daring
  • Adventurous

What is your dream travelling experience?

I have this anxiety till I get the boarding passes in our hand. I wish I can overcome that travel anxiety.

Who is your dream travel companion?

My husband and my children are my dream travel companions. I like traveling with my parents and sister’s family as well. I am a very Family oriented traveler and thankfully we are able to travel atleast 8 to 10 times in a year as a family.

What was the best place you stayed in?

The water villas in Maldives. This luxurious stay did cut a deep hole in our pockets but it was worth the money spent. We could just jump out of our villas and be in the open sea.

How many photos have you taken?

Countless Photos and the memories that come with it are Priceless!!

What’s the most interesting animal you’ve seen?

I have had the experience of touching and feeding a Dolhpin in Singapore’s Sentosa Island. I think it definitely was a memorable experience.

Do you prefer hot, cold or temperate places?

A bit of all!

Would you rather see a lot of places or get to know one really well?

Depends where you are. For eg in hilly areas one would like to indulge in the solitude of nature. Whereas if we are in Rajasthan or Maharashtra I would love to explore more and more forts and palaces.

What’s the longest single journey you’ve taken?

Delhi to Paris, I think was a 10 hour+ flight which was longest I had flown. Once I was going from Delhi to Mumbai in train. This journey was supposed to be around 16 hours long. However, there was this unusual (or rather usual) rain flooding in Mumbai and I was stuck in train for almost 30 hours.

Which religious or spiritual sites have you visited?

I have been to many however Varanasi has a very special place in my heart. I am completely mesmerised by the charm of the evening ganga aarti.

Which country has the best weather?

Of all the places we have been to I think Belgium had a lovely weather.

Do you prefer to walk, take public transport, or take private transport?

A mix of all – isn’t travel all about different experiences!?

What destination have you found to be overrated?

Manneken Pis is a landmark small bronze sculpture (61 cm) in the centre of Brussels (Belgium), depicting a naked little boy urinating into a fountain’s basin. In images it looks like a huge sculpture. In reality it is just 61 cms tall. The destination was overcrowded and the kids enjoyed the local icecream more than this landmark sculpture.

What’s been the best street food you’ve had?

For my taste palates, Pani-puri rules the position for being the best street food.

Beer or wine?

I am a coffee person!
